Endoscopy is a non-surgical procedure used for internal examination. The procedure uses a long, thin and flexible tube called the endoscope, which has a light and camera attached to it. The camera captures coloured images of the interior of the organs or the body cavity and displays it on a monitor to be viewed by the doctor. The minimally-invasive endoscopy procedure involves inserting the endoscope into an opening of the body, such as the mouth, the nostrils or the anal cavity.
Modern endoscopy is also used as a medium to render the right treatment to patients, such as for placing stents through blockages, removing stones, conducting a biopsy, or for treating obesity. Endoscopic procedures are less invasive than surgeries and eliminate the side-effects of medications for losing weight. Mostly such treatments are adopted by individuals who have excess weight but do not qualify for a bariatric procedure. Endoscopic surgery procedure for weight loss allows doctors to place medications or special devices into your gastrointestinal tract to limit your food consumption. This procedure offers easy and faster recovery, no abdominal scars, and less discomfort.
Digestive Health Institute has designed a state-of-the-art endoscopic suite equipped with the latest technology. From pre-surgery diagnostics to non-surgical weight loss procedures, DHI caters to all your requirements with a team of expert surgeons headed by Dr. Rais Ansari. Dr. Rais has been associated with DHI since 2016 and has an experience of over 12 years in the field of endoscopy. To get an endoscopy done at the DHI centre, prior appointment is required.
Doctors use endoscopy to assess the internal organs of the body. Different types of endoscopy procedures are used to investigate, examine, and treat various organs of your body. Let’s understand some of them:
- Upper Gastrointestinal endoscopy In this method, the thin tube of the endoscopy machine is inserted through the mouth to examine the esophagus and the upper intestinal tract.
- Colonoscopy To examine the tailbone or the colon, the doctor uses this type of endoscopy procedure to insert a tube through the anal cavity.
- HysteroscopyThis method is used to investigate the inside of the uterus. For this, the endoscope is inserted through the vagina.
Endoscopy is performed by a gastroenterologist or gastrointestinal surgeon. When conducting upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, you will be asked to fast for at least 6-8 hours prior to the procedure. You will be given sedatives or other pain alleviating medicines through your vein before the endoscopy process begins. All endoscopy procedures are performed under anesthesia which will be sprayed in your mouth to numb your throat. This will prevent any discomfort when the long tube is being inserted through your throat. Once sedated, the surgeon will carefully pass the tube down your esophagus and into your stomach. The small camera mounted on the end of the tube will capture and send video images to monitor. It is the same procedure for endoscopic weight loss, just that a silicon balloon is inserted inside and inflated beside the stomach, thus reducing the stomach from increasing in size and reducing your appetite. A flexible catheter will be used to place and inflate a gastric balloon inside the stomach. The gastric balloon is a soft, biocompatible device made of silicone, which is filled with sterile saline solution. The gastric balloon, when inflated, takes up most of the space in your stomach. As result, it will restrict your food consumption because you will feel satiated even with little food intake. This non-surgical weight loss procedure is completed in 20 to 30 minutes. You will be asked to stay overnight for observation and will be discharged the following day with a diet plan and some medication.
